Paystack vs Flutterwave for Nigerian Apps

Both Paystack and Flutterwave are serious payment infrastructure companies. Choosing between them, or deciding to use both, depends on what you are building and who your customers are. Here is the practical comparison.

The short version

Choose Paystack if:

  • Your primary market is Nigeria
  • You prioritise API documentation quality
  • You need fast, simple integration
  • Your team values developer experience
  • You are building a Nigerian-focused consumer app

Choose Flutterwave if:

  • You operate across multiple African countries
  • You need international card acceptance
  • You want a wider payment method range
  • You are building for diaspora customers
  • You need USD/GBP settlement options

Fee structures (as of 2026)

Both platforms charge a percentage of each transaction. The headline rates are similar, but the details matter.

API quality and developer experience

Paystack has consistently had the better developer experience in the Nigerian market. The documentation is clear, the SDKs are well-maintained (Node.js, PHP, Python), and the sandbox environment behaves consistently with production. The support documentation covers edge cases that developers actually encounter.

Flutterwave's API is capable but the documentation has historically been less consistent. The SDK coverage is broader (reflecting the multi-country scope), but the developer experience for Nigeria-only integrations is not as polished. This gap has been closing. Flutterwave has invested heavily in developer tooling since 2024.

Payment methods: what each supports

Both platforms support the core Nigerian payment methods. The differences are at the edges.

Paystack

  • ·Card (Visa, Mastercard, Verve)
  • ·Bank Transfer
  • ·USSD
  • ·Mobile Money (Ghana)
  • ·QR (beta)
  • ·Bank Account (direct debit)

Flutterwave

  • ·Card (Visa, Mastercard, Verve, Amex)
  • ·Bank Transfer
  • ·USSD
  • ·Mobile Money (8+ African countries)
  • ·M-Pesa (Kenya)
  • ·Pay with Bank
  • ·Barter (digital wallet)

When to use both

For applications with significant transaction volume, using both, with routing logic that sends transactions to whichever gateway is currently performing better, provides resilience and sometimes cost benefits. This is particularly relevant for high-volume e-commerce and fintech applications.

The additional integration complexity is manageable if you abstract the payment layer behind a service interface in your application. We implement this architecture regularly in Nigerian software projects.
